Mercedes will give their support to their stricken former driver Michael Schumacher when they launch their 2014 car, the WO5, in Jerez on Tuesday.

On the side of their car will be the message “#Keep Fighting Michael”. They revealed their move through a picture on Twitter and encouraged other users to follow their lead by retweeting using the hashtag.

Schumacher, 45 earlier this month, remains gravely ill in a French hospital following his skiing accident on 29 December. He has been in a medically induced coma for more than four weeks and the longer he remains in that state the more concern there is that he will be able to make a full recovery.

Schumacher, who won the world championship a record seven times with Benetton (twice) and Ferrari (five) came out of retirement to drive for Mercedes in 2010 before quitting for good at the end of the 2012 season, when the German team announced they had signed Lewis Hamilton from McLaren.

The Formula One season roars back into action after a break of two months today, with the start of the first of three testing sessions before the opening race in Melbourne on 16 March.

“Roars” may not be quite the word, for the old V8 engines have gone, replaced by the new, greener era of 1.6-litre turbo-charged V6s – and no one is quite sure what they will sound like. © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010
